An Acrostic on a young officer [Samuel Thompson] who
belonged to the Continental Army, was greatly beloved, and
died much lamented in the city of New-York, August 12,
[1777] These lines were composed soon after his death and
never before published; but now made public at desire of a
friend.
S hould youth or virtue save us from the grave,
A nd screen the noble, or secure the brave;
M ight we be certain merit would defend
U seful young men, from premature ends,
